FAQs
What are the tryouts for?
Tryouts will take place over the summer to decide what kids will participate on our NENA and Competitive teams. This past season, TA Plymouth had a Competitive Team and a shared NENA Team with TA Weymouth. This season that will be changing.
The kids will tryout for a spot on either our TA Plymouth NENA Team or TA Plymouth Competitive Team. These teams will be completely separate from TA Weymouth, unlike in the past.
**One thing to note, you may only tryout for one gym's team! So once you participate in your first tryout, that is the gym that you are deciding to try out for.**
Who can / has to tryout?
Anyone is eligible to tryout for our ninja team, regardless of experience or level. We will have tryouts for age groups: 6-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14. If you have a child who is 15-17 years old and interested in joining our team, please reach out to Lucas or Kyra directly.
Additionally, even if you are currently on our Competitive or NENA teams you still have to tryout. This is to keep the process fair to all and to make sure the kids are staying motivated.
While anyone can participate in our tryouts, we will have some strength and eligibility requirements which will be outlined below.
Requirements
NENA Team
In order to be considered for our NENA Team, the kids trying out must meet the following requirements:
They must have completed our Level 2 Ninja Class.
They must meet the following strength requirements:
Competitive Team
In order to be considered for our Competitive Team, the kids trying out must meet the following requirements:
They must have completed our Level 1 Ninja Class.
They must meet the following strength requirements:
In addition to these requirements the kids must participate in at least one Team Tryout over the course of the summer. We will take the best 3 scores of the 5 available competitions in to consideration when deciding teams. Scores will be based off of total obstacles completed in each course as well as overall placement. Spots will be given to kids who score the highest in each age group first.
What's the difference?
The difference between our two teams primarily has to do with commitment and competitions.
NENA Team
Our NENA Team will be required to make it into the gym 3 times a week. Their practices will be Tuesday and Thursday. The kids will also be required to come to 1 "open gym" per week. This extra time can be an open gym at TA Plymouth, an open gym at another gym (ex. Vitality, TA Weymouth, etc.), a competition, or a private training session. Each kid will be allowed 3 unexcused absences per month. Not coming to an open gym in a week will count as an unexcused absence.
In addition, NENA Team members are expected to attend all regular season NENA meets but are allowed one unexcused absence from meets. While the exact details of next season are still being determined, NENA meets take place in a 1v1 setting of one gym against another. Each age group competes on a fitting course and the top competitors in each age group earn points for their teams. Whatever gym wins more age groups is determined the overall winner of the meet.
NENA Team members are also encouraged to participate in local NNL, RNL, UNAA, and other competitions outside of NENA.
Competitive Team
Our Competitive Team will be required to make it to 2 practices per week as well as 3 open gyms over the course of the month. Their practices will be Tuesday and Friday. The additional open gyms can be an open gym at TA Plymouth, an open gym at another gym (ex. Vitality, TA Weymouth, etc.), a competition, or a private training session. Each kid will be allowed 3 unexcused absences per month. Not coming to open gyms during the month will count as an unexcused absence.
Competitive Team members are also required to participate in at least 2 competitions over the course of the ninja season (September - March). These competitions can be in house, NNL, RNL, UNAA, or anything else. If you are unsure if something qualifies please reach out. While the kids are only required to participate in 2 competitions, we encourage more! The best way for the kids to improve is by practicing.
Fall Class Times
NENA Team will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at the beginning of the season in September.
